The Visionary Behind the School of Crazy Monkey
Since the age of six, martial arts has been my passion and my path. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of sharing this journey with an incredible range of people: elite special forces operators, law enforcement professionals, close protection specialists, dedicated martial artists, and aspiring trainers from all walks of life.
But what I’ve discovered along the way is this: martial arts can be so much more than punches, kicks, and defense. It's a gateway to thriving in every area of life.
What makes the School of Crazy Monkey different is not just our focus on self-preservation skills—although everything we teach is rigorously tested for real-world application. The heart of what we do is grounded in a bigger vision: empowering trainers and their students to flourish both on and off the mat.
Over the years, I’ve combined decades of experience both on the mats and real world self-preservation experience—with my background as an academic and researcher in the science of human flourishing. How does the Apprenticeship Program work?Step 1: Apply to become an Apprentice Trainer Complete the initial application form to start your journey. Step 2: Zoom Call with Coach Rodney Upon acceptance of your initial application, you will schedule a Zoom call with Coach Rodney King. During this call, Rodney will walk you through the Apprenticeship Trainer roadmap and assess your suitability for the program. Step 3: Receive Your Offer and Make Payment If accepted, you’ll receive an unconditional offer to join the 14-month Apprentice Trainer program. Once payment is made, you will schedule your first official Zoom coaching session with Rodney. Step 4: Plan Your 1-to-1 Coaching Sessions A personalized plan will be created with Coach Rodney to schedule your live 1-to-1 coaching sessions throughout the 14-month program. In these sessions, Rodney will guide you through the CORE Foundational Curriculum. These interactive sessions allow you to troubleshoot, refine your skills, and learn directly from one of the most notable modern martial arts coaches in the world. Step 5: Orientation with Senior Trainers Schedule an orientation call with one of our senior trainers to learn how to access, navigate, and fully utilize our online Virtual School. Step 6: Access to Online Courses In addition to your live Zoom coaching sessions, you’ll gain access to three key online courses throughout your training: Crazy Monkey Philosophy Course: Unlocks at the beginning of your program. Full Contact Living Course: Access begins at month 4, covering mindfulness, breathwork for fighters, and resilience coaching. Marketing & Business School: Available at month 9, focusing on running a successful Crazy Monkey space. Step 7: Prepare for Certification In months 13 and 14, you’ll prepare to sit your Trainer’s License Certification, which includes: Writing a 3000-word essay reflecting on your apprenticeship journey—what you’ve learned, standout moments, and your plans for continued growth. Submitting a recorded live coaching session with a student or class, based on one of four randomly assigned topics. Step 8: Earn Your Certification Upon successfully completing all requirements, you’ll be awarded your Trainer’s Certification, officially accrediting you as a trainer of the School of Crazy Monkey. At this stage, you’ll choose your next step: Running a garage group. Offering the program at an existing academy. Establishing a fully branded School of Crazy Monkey Academy. Based on your choice, you’ll pay a monthly trainer brand license fee, granting you legal rights to use our intellectual property, branding, and logos while officially teaching our material.

What is the Brand License fee?Once you complete the Apprentice Trainer Program and become a certified trainer, you’ll need to pay a brand license fee to continue operating under the School of Crazy Monkey name. This fee, similar to a franchise model, ensures you can legally use our branding, materials, and intellectual property to run your coaching business. We’ve made this fee structure as transparent and affordable as possible, offering three flexible options based on the size and scope of your operation: Garage Group License Ideal for training small groups (up to 10 students). Monthly Fee: USD $85 Annual Fee (12-months): USD $960 (save $60 by paying upfront). Class or Program License For offering Crazy Monkey as a class or program in an existing academy (your own or someone else’s). Monthly Fee: USD $150 Annual Fee (12-months): USD $1,500 (save $300 by paying upfront). Fully Branded School of Crazy Monkey Academy License For those who want to establish a fully branded and recognized School of Crazy Monkey Academy. Monthly Fee: USD $500 Annual Fee (12-months): USD $5,000 (save $1,000 by paying upfront). When Does the Fee Begin? Your first-year brand license fee is included as part of your Apprenticeship Program, so there’s nothing additional to pay during your apprenticeship. The fee only begins once you are officially certified as a trainer and ready to operate under the School of Crazy Monkey brand. By paying the brand license fee, you’ll gain the legal rights to: Use the School of Crazy Monkey branding and logos. Access and teach our proprietary curriculum. Operate as an officially recognized School of Crazy Monkey trainer. Continued online training in our intermediate and advanced methods designed for accredited trainers and above. This structure allows you to grow your coaching business with the flexibility to scale, whether you’re starting small with a Garage Group or aiming for a fully branded academy.

What do you need to complete the Apprenticeship process?To successfully complete the apprenticeship, you’ll need a training partner for the live coaching sessions with Coach Rodney. These calls occur approximately every 60 days, meaning you’ll only need your partner for a few sessions over the 12-month period. You can also utilize the same person/s for your evaluation. For the Crazy Monkey Apprenticeship: Boxing gloves (for you and your partner). A set of focus mitts. For the Monkey-Jits Apprenticeship: Boxing gloves or MMA gloves (for you and your partner). A set of focus mitts. Both of you need a Gi. Your partner can be anyone—a current student, friend, or significant other—who is willing to assist you during the live sessions. You can have a different partner for each session, as the focus is on you, and your development.

When can I begin teaching?At the School of Crazy Monkey, we believe that teaching is one of the most effective ways to master the material. That’s why we encourage all Apprentice Trainers to start coaching as soon as they feel ready. Your first-year brand license fee is included in your Apprenticeship Program costs, allowing you to begin coaching immediately. Throughout your apprenticeship, Coach Rodney will guide you step-by-step through the CORE curriculum—whether in Crazy Monkey Defense or Monkey-Jits. You’ll also receive detailed lesson plans and resources to ensure you feel confident and prepared to coach your students from day one.

Can I certify in Crazy Monkey Defense & Monkey-Jits programs at the same time?Yes, it is possible to certify in both programs. However, each program requires its own focused training and certification process. You can pursue both programs simultaneously, but this will require additional time, effort, and dedication. If you are considering certifying in both, Coach Rodney will guide you on how to structure your apprenticeship to ensure success in mastering both systems. Additional fees apply for the dual certification path.

Is there a way to fast-track the trainers certification?Yes, we offer a fast-track option for those who wish to accelerate their Trainer Apprenticeship program. To be eligible for the fast-track, you must: Complete a minimum of 6 months in the standard apprenticeship path. Apply for the fast-track option. If accepted, you will travel to the Isle of Man to train in person with Coach Rodney over an intensive 5-day program. This immersive experience allows you to shave 6 months off the standard 14-month timeline. You can do this two ways, Either come to Coach Rodney first and then followed by 6-months in the online trainers program to learn our Full Contact Living Program, and complete the Business & Marketing Course. Complete the Crazy Monkey Philosophy course, the Full Contact Living Program, and Business and Marketing Course first (takes approximately 6 months) and then attend 5-days training with Coach Rodney. Cost for the fast-track option is provided upon application.
